APHS Annual Membership Meeting and Special Program Presentation: “Local Railroads of the New Jersey Shore.”
January 16 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
The Asbury Park Historical Society is pleased to welcome its members, supporters and the community to its Annual Membership meeting at the Asbury Park Public Library on Thursday, January 16, at 6:30 PM. The Historical Society will discuss its goals for 2025 and opportunities for members to become involved in APHS committees and activities for the upcoming year.
The Historical Society’s evening program will be a special presentation by local historian Bill Elwell, “Local Railroads of the New Jersey Shore.” Elwell is an adjunct Professor of History at Monmouth University and lifelong Jersey Shore resident.
Railroads were the defining factor in creating and shaping the development of the once desolate Jersey Shore beachfront beginning in the 1870s, as a center for everything from day trips to whole summer vacations. Elwell’s work explores railroads and their effects on the Jersey Shore, especially vacationing and commuting, through the lens of railroad-publications like timetables and advertisements.
Elwell is on the Board of the Ocean County Historical Society, a member of the Anthracite Roads Historical Society and West Jersey Chapter of NRHS, formerly worked in historical outreach for Monmouth County, and is proud to help share our common story.
All our welcome to attend the Asbury Park Historical Society annual meeting and program presentation. Light refreshments will be served.
