SUMMARY:Calling All Sweethearts to The Crane House
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2643″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]Calling All Sweethearts – For a Movie Showing\, Monday\, February 16 at 3 pm\, at the Stephen Crane House\, 508 Fourth Avenue\, Asbury Park. \nAsbury Park Historical Society’s cherished Frank Dalessandro\, will be screening an old-fashioned\, light-hearted musical film based (loosely) on a Victor Herbert operetta and\npromises to be a delightful conclusion to this year’s Valentine’s Day weekend. \nThe 1938 MGM film “Sweethearts\,” starring Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy\, holds the distinction of being MGM’s first feature-length movie produced in three-strip Technicolor. The film dazzles with its vibrant costumes\, a multitude of extras\, and magnificent orchestral scores. \n“Sweethearts” debuted just a year before the beloved “Wizard of Oz.” Notably\, Frank Morgan\, who played the wizard\, is third billed after the two leads. The film also features everyone’s favorite scarecrow\, Ray Bolger\, performing lively dance moves dressed as a Dutchman. Additionally\, the renowned writer Dorothy Parker\, originally from Long Branch\, was brought in to enhance the dialogue. \nPlease join the Asbury Park Historical Society for a lovely afternoon of music and camaraderie with light refreshments\, coffee\, tea\, cake and cookies. \nAll Asbury Park Historical Society members are invited to attend gratis. All others are encouraged to make a small donation if possible\, for the Historical Society.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Annual Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2616″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]Please join the Asbury Park Historical Society for our Annual Membership Meeting Thursday\, January 22\, at 6:30 p.m. at the Asbury Park Public Library\, located at First and Grand Avenues. \nThe Historical Society is pleased to host Jason Adolf\, PH. D. Endowed Professor of Marine Science at Monmouth University to talk about the History and Natural Life of Asbury Park’s Coastal Lakes and to share simple ways that we can help protect them. \nDr. Adolf’s research focuses on marine ecology and the challenges facing our coastal waters. Before the arrival of European settlers\, the indigenous Lanape traversed the lakes in our area\, whose tributaries at one time opened to the ocean and an abundance of sea life. Dr. Adolf’s presentation will explore the environmental conditions and mechanisms that drive changes\, and how these shifts impact the functioning of marine and aquatic ecosystems. \nLight refreshments will be provided. All are invited to attend.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Seasons Readings 2025
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2589″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]For a couple of decades beginning in 2001\, Christmas at Asbury Park’s Stephen Crane House (508 4th Avenue) has centered around our “Season’s Readings” program. That tradition ended along with the arrival of the pandemic. \nSo\, this year we would like to present the 20th edition of “Season’s Readings”: a compendium of mostly light-hearted stories\, poems\, songs\, etc. related to the Christmas Season. Barring a snowstorm or pesky nor’easter\, we’ve scheduled our literary celebration for Sunday\, December 21\, the 1st day of winter\, at 2 PM. \nFor those who wish to remain after the literary portion of the afternoon\, a screening of our favorite seasonal film: “Jim Henson’s Emmett Otter’s Jug-band Christmas” will follow. \nCoffee\, soft drinks\, cookies and other surprises will be served. \nAPHS Members may attend gratis. Donations in any amount are welcome.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”View Flyer” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0877A6″ custom_text=”#FFFFFF” shape=”square” align=”center” css=”” link=”url:%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2025%2F12%2FAPHS-Coaster-Ad-for-Frank-D-12-8-2025.pdf|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Mischief Night at the Stephen Crane House
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2534″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]It’s fascinating to consider the connection between two renowned American authors with such distinct writing styles. The link between Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen Crane was first noted by another literary giant\, Willa Cather. At the age of 21\, Cather met the 23-year-old Crane in Lincoln\, Nebraska\, and observed that Crane was carrying a copy of Poe’s short stories. Both Poe and Crane were incredibly prolific\, producing a significant body of work during their relatively short lives. Poe passed away at the age of 40 in 1849\, while Crane died at the young age of 28\, a half-century later. \nOn “Mischief Night” at the Stephen Crane House\, Frank D’Alessandro will continue his tradition of Edgar Allan Poe readings to celebrate both the Halloween season and Stephen Crane’s 154th birthday. \nThe readings will be two gruesome short stories by Edgar Allan Poe: \n\nThe Tell-Tale Heart\nThe Cask of Amontillado\n\nFor those who dare to remain after the readings\, there will be a screening of I Married a Witch with Veronica Lake and Fredric March. \nRefreshments in keeping with the Halloween season will be provided\, along with a birthday cake in honor of Stephen Crane. \nFor more information\, click the button below.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”View Flyer” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0877A6″ custom_text=”#FFFFFF” shape=”square” align=”center” css=”” link=”url:%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2025%2F10%2FPoe-Crane-Event-Oct-30-2025.pdf|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Dark City: A True Crime Walking Tour of Asbury Park
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2519″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]The Dark City: True Crime Walking Tour peels back the layers of Asbury Park’s glittering seaside image to reveal its untold underbelly with stories of murder\, mystery\, and mischief that shaped the city’s past. \n“It offers a history of the city that is not frequently shared\, the darker side of the city\,” tour guide Lesley Schierenbeck said. “This storytelling walk is both unforgettable and impactful.” \nEvents included in the tour are The Baby Parade Tragedy\, when a beloved local tradition took a shocking turn in 1910 and left the city reeling. The Dead Beach tour will take people to the Sunset Avenue beach\, just north of Convention Hall. Find out why this is one of the most important and historic sites (and maybe one of the most haunted) in American maritime history. \nInteresting facts about the famous Madame Marie’s Boardwalk Fortune-Telling Stand and Mrs. Jay’s Tavern (now the Stone Pony) are on the tour. Along with the story of Indian Bill’s Revenge\, a brutal story that roots Asbury Park’s earliest true crime lore in betrayal and blood. \nThe Asbury Park Historical Society is partnering with History Chick Tours for the special one-night-only True Crime Walking Tour. \n\nOne Night Only: Saturday\, October 25 at 7 PM • Raindate: October 26th at 7PM\nMeeting Point: Bradley Park (Across from Convention Hall\, 1300 Ocean Avenue\, Asbury Park\nReserve your spot at: www.historychicktours.com\n\nDon’t miss your chance to experience Asbury Park like never before. SUMMARY:Book Event: The Bowery A Pictorial History | Illustrated Talk with author David Mulkins
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2495″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]Writer Stephen Crane (1871-1900) began his internationally renowned writing career as a newspaper reporter in Asbury Park\, N.J. He went on to become a war correspondent\, poet\, and writer of short stories and novels. His innovative\, objective\, observational\, true- to-life writing style\, known as literary Naturalism\, or\, Impressionism\, influenced Ernest Hemingway and other modern writers that followed. \nThough best remembered for his war novel The Red Badge of Courage (1895)\, Crane also wrote several important works set in New York City’s Bowery\, including his first novel\, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (1893) about a young woman’s struggle to survive the grating poverty\, aloneness and prostitution. \nDavid Mulkins’s The Bowery\, a pictorial history\, does a deep dive into a world that Stephen Crane once called “the most interesting place in New York.” The city’s oldest street\, and first entertainment district\, the Bowery was something of an incubator of American popular culture\, as well as a famous skid row. It was the stomping ground for gangs\, gays\, sailors\, shopgirls\, sporting men\, the working class and immigrants. A place like no other. \nSpecial guest: Ramona Baker\, ragtime pianist.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:APHS Annual Membership Meeting and Special Program Presentation: "Local Railroads of the New Jersey Shore."
DESCRIPTION:The Asbury Park Historical Society is pleased to welcome its members\, supporters and the community to its Annual Membership meeting at the Asbury Park Public Library on Thursday\, January 16\, at 6:30 PM. The Historical Society will discuss its goals for 2025 and opportunities for members to become involved in APHS committees and activities for the upcoming year. \nThe Historical Society’s evening program will be a special presentation by local historian Bill Elwell\, “Local Railroads of the New Jersey Shore.” Elwell is an adjunct Professor of History at Monmouth University and lifelong Jersey Shore resident. \nRailroads were the defining factor in creating and shaping the development of the once desolate Jersey Shore beachfront beginning in the 1870s\, as a center for everything from day trips to whole summer vacations. Elwell’s work explores railroads and their effects on the Jersey Shore\, especially vacationing and commuting\, through the lens of railroad-publications like timetables and advertisements. \nElwell is on the Board of the Ocean County Historical Society\, a member of the Anthracite Roads Historical Society and West Jersey Chapter of NRHS\, formerly worked in historical outreach for Monmouth County\, and is proud to help share our common story. \nAll our welcome to attend the Asbury Park Historical Society annual meeting and program presentation. Light refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Edgar Allan Poe Readings to celebrate the Halloween Season
DESCRIPTION:It will be “Mischief Night” at the Stephen Crane House\, 508 4th Avenue\, Asbury Park on Wednesday\, October 30\, at 7 PM. We will continue our tradition of Edgar Allan Poe readings to celebrate both the Halloween season and Stephen Crane’s 153rd birthday. It seems strange that two great American authors with such wildly disparate writing styles should be somehow linked. The Poe-Crane connection is due to yet another great American author. It was the 21-year-old Willa Cather who met the 23-year-old Stephen Crane in Lincoln\, Nebraska\, who first made the connection. According to Cather\, Stephen had a copy of Poe’s short stories with him. Both Poe and Crane had such a prolific amount of writing produced in their short lives. Poe died at the age of 40 in 1849; Crane died at age 28 a half century later. We will be reading two gruesome short stories by Mr. Poe: “The Black Cat” and “The Cask of Amontillado”. Both stories involve Poe’s obsession with “immurement”: walled imprisonment as a form of execution. After the readings\, we will have refreshments in keeping with the Halloween season and including a birthday cake for Stephen Crane. For those who dare to remain\, we will have a screening of “Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Terror” with Vincent Price\, Peter Lorre\, and Basil Rathbone. \nWe invite all members of the Asbury Park Historical Society to join us gratis but encourage non-members to attend with a donation in any amount. Doors open at 6:30 PM with the program to begin at 7 PM. Hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Readings from Edgar Allan Poe dedicated to Tom Chesek
DESCRIPTION:The program on Thursday\, October 26th at the Stephen Crane House in Asbury Park will be dedicated to Tom Chesek\, the former curator of the Crane House and organizer of all the programs there\, who died suddenly earlier this year. The evening will include readings of “The Tell-Tale Heart” (1843)\, “Annabel Lee” (1849)\, Poe’s most famous poem\, “The Raven” (1845)\, and a screening of a film based upon a Poe story: “The Premature Burial”. We will end the evening with light refreshments. Typically\, we have not asked for donations\, but for this event we are asking for a minimum of $10. Half of all the money collected will be given to the Asbury Park Historical Society and the other half will go to the Asbury Park Museum with Kay Harris as its president. Tom was very passionate about the success of that endeavor. Asbury Park’s Stephen Crane House is at 508 Fourth Avenue. Doors open at 6:00 PM and the program begins at 6:30 PM.

The 3:00 pm program also features a screening of “Sir\, I Exist!\,” our recently produced video on Crane’s life and career\, with doors opening at 2:30 pm\, and a free-will donation taken at the door to help support the community programs of the Asbury Park Historical Society. \nCall 732-361-0189 for additional info!
